Cerita Anak (Child’s Story) draws its inspiration from the seafaring history in Java and the true tale of arrival told by a small boy. A magical sequence brings to life a dazzling ocean, where audience members, both young and old, are passengers and storytellers on this not to be missed adventure.

The inaugural UNSW ASEAN Conference will be a one-day event bringing together students with regional and diplomatic stakeholders to discuss key issues across Southeast Asia. The theme will be ‘Enriching Identity, Unlocking Potential’.

Three core pillars will form the framework of the conference – the Economic Community Pillar, the Socio-Cultural Pillar and the Political Security Pillar; further diversified by tracks on sustainability, equity and equality, future and technology. The Saturday event promises to be rewarding and informative for all attendees.

The conference will also enable greater understanding and initiate awareness among our emerging leaders on aspects of political-security, socio-cultural and economics in the ASEAN region, provide a platform for students across Australia to share their thoughts on ASEAN related issues and discuss how to advocate critical discussions on the partnership of ASEAN-Australia.

This valuable opportunity will introduce students to possibilities available within the region while inspiring future change makers.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in partnership with Asia Education Foundation is pleased to host the Australia-ASEAN Youth Forum as part of Australia now ASEAN 2019.

The Asia Education Foundation is now inviting Year 9-11 students in teams of six, wishing to participate in the Australia-ASEAN Youth Forum to submit a two minute video responding to ‘digital connectivity’ from the perspective of one of the ASEAN member states or Australia.

Bringing students together from across Australia, this engaging learning experience will explore opportunities and challenges presented by digital trade, digital infrastructure, and digital innovation for ASEAN member countries and Australia. Students will develop their general capabilities, including their intercultural understanding, personal and social capability, and creative and critical thinking skills.

Only 11 Australian school teams can attend this program, one for each member of ASEAN, including Australia. If selected, your school team along with one staff member will be brought to Sydney for the final program on November 20th, with flights and accommodation covered as part of your ASEAN experience. Your team will take part in an interactive youth forum at the beautiful Sydney Opera House, with delegates from around Australia, linked via video with peers in Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.

The Forum will provide young people with intercultural learning experience, providing skills to navigate global diversity and negotiate their agency in communities within Australia and the ASEAN region.

Registrations close 19 September – read more about how to apply.

This year the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra renewed its historic cultural partnership with the Government of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, for another three years, with plans for a fourth Youth Music camp in August. Across four days, students will participate in string instrument tutorials and rehearsals with MSO musicians. These workshops will culminate in a concert where students will perform side by side with the MSO. New to the collaboration with the Government of the Special Region of Yogyakarta will be an orchestral management workshop for students, reflecting the MSO’s educational leadership and expertise. Also across four days, this workshop will enable students to take a deep dive into the world of managing an orchestra, from strategy, operations, production and OH&S, to artistic planning, budgeting, finance and HR.

Prior to arriving in Yogyakarta, the MSO will stop over in Jakarta to deliver a string quintet workshop with MSO musicians and an arts management workshop presented by MSO Managing Director, Sophie Galaise, Chief Operating Officer, Guy Ross, Director of Artistic Planning, Melissa King and Director of Operations, Gabrielle Waters. The MSO looks forward to sharing knowledge and exchanging ideas with attendees, who will represent various organisations such as galleries, theatres, music industry bodies and cultural centres.

By invitation.

Australia’s own film maker, Marisa Martin will deliver a special workshop for Bophana students learning to make short documentaries. Marisa is in town as part of the Australia Now Flickerfest Festival on June 8th. The students are being supported by the Australian Embassy and Oxfam Cambodia to learn documentary film making, and they are learning to create short films that highlight the challenges faced by Indigenous Cambodian women in their home provinces. The workshop by Marisa will help students learn new techniques, and create lasting links between Australian and Cambodian film makers.
