ASEAN FLiCKERFEST 2020 Festival at Bondi Beach!

We can’t wait for next week’s announcement of the program for FLiCKERFEST 2020 at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach in January 2020!

The January program will include the winning ASEAN entries from the Australia now sponsored ASEAN FLiCKERFEST 2020 Competition.

The three selected ASEAN finalists will win a trip to their screening at FLiCKERFEST 2020, including: airfares, accommodation, travel expenses, development and networking opportunities with industry professionals while in Australia.

2020 is promising to be a bumper program with FLiCKERFEST celebrating its 29th year of screening the best short films from Australia and around the world. The Academy® Accredited and BAFTA-recognised festival program spans 10 days & nights of special showcases and competitions – so join us on the red carpet in Bondi this January!

FLiCKERFEST in Myanmar

Award-winning Indigenous Australian Film Maker Darlene Johnson will visit Myanmar in November to engage with local filmmakers and share her experience in the film industry. Darlene is an Indigenous Australian of the east-coast Dunghutti people of NSW. Darlene’s visit will celebrate the FLiCKERFEST ASEAN 2020 Film Competition, which is open to filmmakers from across the ASEAN region. Participants will have the opportunity to view past FLiCKERFEST Competition entries and learn more about Indigenous film initiatives in Australia with first hand insights from Darlene.

Darlene will also be Australia’s international delegate to the 2019 MEMORY! International Film Heritage Festival – 15 to 24 November. The festival focuses on global and regional cinema & cinema heritage and is unique to Southeast Asia. Festival audiences will be treated to Darlene Johnson presenting her award-winning film ‘Bluey’ and they will be able to join panel discussions on this year’s festival theme which celebrates diversity – ‘Life Together’.

While in Myanmar, Darlene will also engage audiences with a story based workshop for a select group of young and emerging film makers as part of the Myanmar Script Fund, an annual scriptwriting workshop and competition, associated with the Myanmar MEMORY! Film Festival.

BIRDIE Screening with Film Maker Shelly Lauman

Highly acclaimed Australian film maker Shelly Lauman will be in town for the Australia now FLiCKERFEST Festival on 1 November. The Australian Embassy in Vietnam is delighted to host Shelly who will participate in workshops and engage audiences with a Q&A after a special screening of her latest work Birdie which received an Australian Director’s Guild / Metro Screen Production Fellowship. Birdie premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival and then screened internationally at the Toronto International Film Festival and in competition at FLiCKERFEST 2019. Birdie has also been acquired by Fox Searchlight Pictures, a first for the studio, with Shelly being nominated by the Australian Directors’ Guild for Best Direction in a Short Film for Birdie. Gender, body, and voicelessness are the main themes of Shelly Lauman’s work.

The film festival forms part of the Embassy’s Gender Month activities and includes screening of a selection of female-directed short films.

Hanoi International Queer Film Week

As part of Hanoi International Queer Film Week, Australia now together with the Australian Embassy in Hanoi is excited to present a special screening of the highly acclaimed documentary, Gayby Baby – directed by Australian filmmaker Maya Newell. This tender and intimate film follows the lives of four kids – Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham – whose parents all happen to be gay. As they each wrestle with personal change in their own lives, the film depicts with beautiful honesty the reality that children raised by same sex couples have been around for generations.

FLiCKERFEST & QCinema – Manila

QCinema International Film Festival is an annual film festival in the Philippines, and this year will run from October 13-22. As October is also National Indigenous Month in the Philippines, the Australian Embassy in the Philippines will showcase some outstanding indigenous short films. Special guest speakers will also be featured, including indigenous film maker – Dena Curtis from the Indigenous Speaker Series, and Annie Award-nominated and Oscar® shortlisted writer and director Bradley Slabe.

The film line up will include indigenous short film ‘Welcome To Country’ written and directed by Dean Gibson. The film sees a hotshot public servant sent to a remote Aboriginal community to prepare for the Prime Minister’s visit… there he quickly learns the true meaning of Welcome to Country.

Film Workshops in Brunei with Samantha Laidlaw

Award-winning Australian producer Samantha Laidlaw will visit Brunei this September to engage with local filmmakers and share her experience in the film industry. Her visit will also promote the FLiCKERFEST ASEAN 2020 Film Competition which is open to filmmakers from across ASEAN. Samantha was a FLiCKERFEST 2017 finalist with her short film, The Boggabilla Bus.

Hosted at the Mahakarya Institute of Arts Asia (MIAA), Samantha will be speak to media and film students from various secondary schools as well as independent filmmakers. Participants will have the opportunity to view past entries into the FLiCKERFEST Competition and share their locally made films with Samantha.

MIAA, which has an MOU with TAFE QLD, is Brunei’s first dedicated arts education institution which focuses on providing the knowledge, skills and understanding of content creators to establish a sustainable ecosystem for filmmaking and creative content in Brunei.

FLiCKERFEST goes to Malaysia – Short & Sweet Film Festival

In celebration of the creative spirit of Australia now, the FLiCKERFEST Short Film Program will feature at the Short & Sweet Film Festival in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) in Sentul Park, Kuala Lumpur is one of the most established performing art centres in Malaysia and is excited to present Flickerfest Short Film highlights at this year’s Short & Sweet Film Festival. On Wednesday 4th September Marisa’s workshop will run from 3pm – 6pm, with the FLiCKERFEST film screening 7pm – 9pm and Thursday 5th September – 7:00pm-9:00pm.

Australian filmmaker and animator, Marisa Martin, will introduce her award winning animation, Della Mortika: Carousel of Shame, alongside the full FLiCKERFEST Short Film Program. She will also facilitate a film making workshop and take part in a panel discussion and Q&A session with well-known actors, writers, directors and producers from the Malaysian film industry.
