The Living Arts Cultural Festival

The Australian High Commission in Malaysia together with Australia now is delighted to be bringing Indigenous Australian cultural group Malawurr to Kuala Lumpur to join the Living Arts Cultural Festival, organised by the Malaysian Ministry for Tourism and Culture.`
Malawurr have been travelling the world, sharing traditional songlines from the Gälpu Clan of North East Arnhem Land in Australia. Larry Larrtjaŋga Gurruwiwi and his brothers, Jason Guwanbal Gurruwiwi and Vernon Marrit’ŋu Gurruwiwi, are all sons of legendary didgeridoo Master and Gälpu Clan leader Djalu Gurruwiwi. They were all featured in the film ‘Westwind: Djalu’s Legacy’ which tells the story of Djalu passing his songlines over to his sons to carry. To witness these songlines in the flesh is a truly mesmerising experience. The brothers are also members of heavyweight Arnhem Land band Bärra West Wind, and are currently working on a new feature film called Morning Star.
The festival theme is – Revitalising Community Culture – and the event forms part of the Indigenous Speaker Series (celebrating the International Year of Indigenous Languages), managed by First Languages Australia in partnership with Australia now ASEAN.
The Living Arts Cultural Festival runs from 15-17 November at the Malaysian Tourism Centre (MaTiC) on Jalan Ampang and the Square, Publika. Malawurr will be performing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Visit the festival site to confirm times.
