Welcome to the Australia now ASEAN 2019 website.

Australia and Malaysia are increasingly recognising each other as natural partners. We have a dynamic, multi-faceted relationship, founded on common interests and institutions. Our shared history in defence and security cooperation stretches back to World War II, the Malayan Emergency and the Confrontation, where Australian and Malaysian soldiers fought side by side. Our longstanding ties in education, trade, tourism and migration live at the heart of our Strategic Partnership.

The historic election on 9 May 2018 saw the first change of government in Malaysia since independence. Australia is very excited about the “New Malaysia” or “Malaysia Baru” and we are unashamed in saying that we would like to be Malaysia’s partner of choice as it moves forward along the path of reform.

The focus on ASEAN this year for Australia now is a great opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to remaining a steadfast partner in this region. As our region undergoes enormous change, we will need to work ever more closely together. The 2017 Foreign Policy White Paper reaffirmed the high priority Australia places on our support for ASEAN, as well as our relationships with all ASEAN states, including Malaysia.

I welcome Australia now ASEAN 2019 and trust it will help us to realise the vast potential of this region.

High Commissioner to Malaysia, Andrew Goledzinowski
